DOES SOFWAVE REALLY WORK?

A CONSULTANT PLASTIC SURGEON’S HONEST GUIDE TO THE SCIENCE BEHIND SOFWAVE®

One of the questions I often get during a consultation is “Does Sofwave really work?” and it’s exactly the right question to ask.

As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, I don’t believe in recommending treatments simply because they’re popular or heavily marketed. Every treatment I offer has to be supported by scientific evidence, deliver consistent results and, most importantly, be appropriate for the individual sitting in front of me.

The short answer is: Yes – Sofwave® has been clinically proven to improve skin laxity by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production.

However, like any medical treatment, the results depend on choosing the right patient, setting realistic expectations and ensuring the treatment is performed correctly.

Let’s look at why:

SOFWAVE AT A GLANCE

Treatment Time: Around 30-90 minutes

Anaesthetic: Local anaesthetic cream is typically used

Downtime: Minimal to none

Best for: Mild to moderate skin laxity and collagen

Results begin: Around 6-8 weeks

Best results: Around 12 weeks

Longevity: Up to 12 months or longer for some patients

WHAT IS SOFWAVE?

Sofwave® is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive ultrasound treatment that uses patented SUPERB™ (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam) technology.

The ultrasound energy is delivered precisely into the mid-dermis – approximately 1.5 mm beneath the surface of the skin – where collagen is naturally produced.

This controlled heating stimulates your body’s natural healing response, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin without damaging the skin’s surface.

Unlike surgery, there are no incisions and virtually no downtime. Unlike injectables, nothing is added to your face.

Instead, Sofwave encourages your own skin to repair, regenerate and strengthen itself.

SO, DOES SOFWAVE REALLY WORK?

The evidence suggests yes.

Clinical studies have demonstrated significant improvements in skin laxity following a single Sofwave treatment, particularly around the:

  • Brows
  • Jawline
  • Neck
  • Under the chin
  • Cheeks

Patients commonly notice:

  • Firmer skin
  • Improved jawline definition
  • A subtle lifting effect
  • Softer fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin texture
  • A fresher, healthier appearance

Importantly, these improvements happen gradually as your body produces new collagen over the following weeks and months.

HOW DOES SOFWAVE TIGHTEN THE SKIN?

Collagen is the protein responsible for keeping skin firm, strong and youthful.

Unfortunately, from our mid-twenties onwards, collagen production naturally begins to decline. Over time this contributes to looser skin, fine lines and reduced elasticity.

Sofwave works by delivering carefully controlled ultrasound energy into the mid-dermis, triggering the body’s natural wound-healing response. This stimulates fibroblasts – the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin – to create new structural support within the skin.

The result isn’t an artificial change in your appearance. Instead, your skin gradually becomes firmer and tighter as it naturally rebuilds itself.

WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE SEE DRAMATIC RESULTS?

This is probably the most important part of the discussion. No treatment works equally well for everyone and your results depend on several factors.

Your age

Younger skin generally produces collagen more efficiently than older skin.

The degree of skin laxity

Sofwave works best for mild to moderate skin laxity.

If significant excess skin is present, surgery may provide a more appropriate solution.

Your body’s ability to produce collagen

Smoking, genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle and certain medical conditions can all influence collagen production.

Your expectations

Sofwave is designed to produce natural-looking skin tightening and rejuvenation. It is not intended to produce the same level of lifting as a surgical facelift.

Having realistic expectations is one of the most important factors in achieving patient satisfaction.

IS SOFWAVE WORTH THE INVESTMENT?

This is another question I genuinely welcome during consultations.

Sofwave is undoubtedly a premium treatment. However, its value shouldn’t simply be judged by comparing prices.

Instead, consider what you’re receiving:

  • A comprehensive assessment by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon
  • Medical-grade, evidence-based technology
  • A personalised treatment plan
  • Natural collagen stimulation
  • Little or no downtime (most commonly no downtime at all)
  • Gradual, natural-looking improvements
  • Long-lasting results

Many patients tell me they aren’t looking to appear dramatically different. Instead, they simply want friends and family to comment: “You look really well.” “You look refreshed.”

For many people, that’s exactly the outcome they’re hoping to achieve.

WHAT ABOUT BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS?

Before and after photographs can be helpful but they should always be interpreted carefully.

Lighting, camera angle, facial expression and timing can all influence how dramatic a result appears.

As a surgeon, I place greater value on:

  • High-quality clinical evidence
  • Peer-reviewed research
  • Careful patient assessment
  • Honest patient feedback
  • Consistent, long-term results

Realistic expectations almost always lead to happier patients than unrealistic promises.

WHY I CHOSE TO OFFER SOFWAVE

Patients often assume clinics choose treatments based on trends. That isn’t how I practise. I chose Sofwave because it aligns with my philosophy of evidence-based regenerative medicine.

I wanted a treatment that:

  • Stimulates the body’s own healing processes
  • Produces subtle, elegant and natural-looking improvements
  • Has a strong clinical evidence base for both efficacy and safety
  • Has high patient satisfaction
  • Requires little to no downtime
  • Complements other treatments when appropriate
  • Does not hinder future surgery in that area such as a face or neck lift

As a Plastic Surgeon, it is always about how to optimise results. Sofwave is great for improving skin laxity and quality, so can be used as a stand alone treatment or in combination with other treatments both non-surgically and surgically.

My priority is always recommending what is most appropriate not simply providing the treatment a patient initially asks for.

IS SOFWAVE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sofwave may be an excellent option if you’re beginning to notice:

  • Early jowls
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Loss of jawline definition
  • Fine lines
  • Crepey skin on the neck
  • Mild brow descent
  • General loss of skin firmness

During your consultation, we’ll carefully assess your skin, discuss your goals and decide together whether Sofwave is the right option or whether another treatment would be more suitable.

Every face is different, and every treatment plan should be too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SOFWAVE®

DOES SOFWAVE HURT?

Most patients describe Sofwave as feeling warm with intermittent prickling sensations rather than painful. The treatment incorporates Sofcool™ technology, which continuously cools the skin’s surface while ultrasound energy is delivered beneath it, helping to maximise comfort.

Pain tolerance varies from person to person, and the discomfort passes once the energy is delivered. Most patients return to work or their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

HOW LONG DO SOFWAVE RESULTS LAST?

Collagen remodelling continues for several months after treatment, with many patients seeing their best results at approximately 12 weeks.

Results can last for up to a year or longer, although this varies depending on age, skin quality, lifestyle and the natural ageing process. Some patients choose periodic maintenance treatments to preserve their results.

HOW MANY SOFWAVE TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Many patients achieve noticeable improvement after a single treatment.

However, everyone’s skin is different. Depending on your skin quality, degree of laxity and treatment goals, I may recommend a second treatment or future maintenance sessions.

Your treatment plan will always be tailored to your individual needs.

DOES SOFWAVE WORK FOR JOWLS?

Yes. Sofwave can be an excellent treatment for early or mild jowl formation.

By stimulating collagen production, it helps improve skin firmness and jawline definition, softening the appearance of early jowls.

If significant skin laxity is present, however, surgery may provide a more predictable outcome. This is something we’ll discuss honestly during your consultation.

DOES SOFWAVE WORK UNDER THE CHIN?

Yes, Sofwave can improve mild skin laxity beneath the chin.

However, if fullness beneath the chin is caused primarily by excess fat rather than loose skin, a different treatment may be more appropriate.

A careful assessment helps determine the best approach.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I CONSIDER SOFWAVE?

There isn’t a perfect age.

Many patients begin treatment in their late thirties or forties when they first notice subtle skin laxity, while others choose Sofwave later as part of a broader skin rejuvenation plan.

However, for some, skin laxity signs show far earlier and patients in their twenties have great results with Sofwave – seeing more of a ‘snatched’ refreshing lift and aiming to minimise the increasing skin laxity.

The decision should always be based on your skin rather than your age alone.

IS SOFWAVE SAFE?

Sofwave has been extensively studied and is FDA-cleared for lifting the eyebrows, lifting lax tissue beneath the chin and neck, and improving facial lines and wrinkles.

When performed by a suitably trained medical professional, it has an excellent safety profile.

Temporary redness or mild swelling may occur immediately afterwards, but these effects usually resolve quickly.

IS SOFWAVE WORTH THE MONEY?

Whether Sofwave represents good value depends on your goals and expectations.

If you’re looking for a non-surgical treatment that stimulates your own collagen production, requires minimal downtime and produces gradual, natural-looking improvements, many patients feel it is an excellent investment.

However, if you’re hoping for the dramatic lifting achieved with a surgical facelift, Sofwave is unlikely to meet those expectations. It is vital to remember, however, that while surgery can achieve dramatic results, surgery alone does not improve the skin quality. This is why Sofwave is often used before and/or after surgeries such as face and neck lifts to improve the skin quality and optimise results.

A NOTE FROM DR SHETHA NAJI

One of the most important parts of my consultation is helping patients understand not only what a treatment can achieve, but also what it can’t.

Sometimes Sofwave is the right choice, and sometimes another treatment or even no treatment at all is the better recommendation.

My aim is always to provide honest, evidence-based advice so that you can make an informed decision that’s right for you. Every recommendation I make is based on your individual concerns, anatomy and long-term goals, ensuring your treatment plan is as unique as you are.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So, does Sofwave actually work?

For the right patient, yes.

Its ability to stimulate collagen production and improve skin firmness is supported by a growing body of clinical evidence, and many patients achieve noticeable, natural-looking improvements after just one treatment.

The key isn’t simply choosing the latest technology – it’s choosing the right treatment for your skin, your concerns and your long-term goals.

As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, my role is to help you make that decision with honest advice, realistic expectations and a personalised treatment plan.

If you’re considering Sofwave and would like to find out whether it’s the right treatment for you, I’d be delighted to discuss your options during a consultation.
